Years ago we had lots of magpies in the neighborhood. They love to torment the cats and other things they can torment. I've always liked them despite their bully tactics. One spring we watched as a couple built a great nest right outside our kitchen window. It was really high up in one of our Cottonwood trees and it was architecturally neat. Mother's Day comes along and we are eating breakfast, I look out the window and my cat's tail is hanging out from inside the nest. The magpies moved away and it seems it was shortly after that, maybe. Anyway they moved from the neighborhood. They'd come visit for treats but I didn't see nesting spots as I was about. Last spring a whole bunch moved into our neighborhood. There were nests all over the neighborhood. A lot of magpies. Most people hate magpies. My neighbors go on and on about it. People think they are mean. I feed them. I loved having them around. Magpies are fear adverse so it's hard to get close, but I've worked on it over the years and I have a few who know me and will come somewhat close to me (for food). I have one who sits outside the window and squacks until I bring treats. Another, will chatter to me in a way that sounds like speech. I really want one of them to say "hello" to me. Working on that. About a week or so ago, all the magpies left. I read that they sometimes make dramatic moves. I hope they come back.
